Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are a new medical technology used in the treatment of many sporting injuries.
The procedure uses the growth factors and natural healing cells in your own blood to help repair tendon damage and treat the pain caused by injuries and chronic wear.
These injections have been only performed in the recent years in Australia and are generally done by specialised sports doctors. Having a doctor is advantageous as it means incorporation of the procedure into the overall management of a patient’s injury.
PRP is most commonly performed under ultrasound and used for tendon attachments at the elbow (tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow), hamstring origin, patella (jumper’s knee), Achilles tendon or the plantar fascia (heel spur). Prior to treatment, an accurate diagnosis is essential which will usually require a diagnostic ultrasound or MRI scan.
